A Comparative Study On The Translation Of The Theory Of Criticism And Appreciation In Wenxin Diaolong From The Perspective Of Reception Aesthetics

Theory of Criticism and Appreciation,as one of the three major discourse systems in Wenxin Diaolong,shows Chinese unique criticism theory and classical poetics.Under the background of Chinese culture going out,in order to promote the equal dialogue between Chinese and Western literary theories,it is of great practical significance to study the English translation and acceptance of Theory of Criticism and Appreciation.At present,the research on the reception of the English versions of the theory is still blank.Therefore,from the perspective of Reception Aesthetics,this paper selects two English versions with totally different cultural backgrounds for comparative study,trying to clarify the reconstruction strategies and the reception of the two versions,so as to put forward objective suggestions for better dissemination of Chinese literary classics' translation.Following conclusions are drawn through comparative analysis: firstly,as for translation strategy,Stephen Owen's translation mainly adopts foreignization,while Yang Guobin's mainly adopts the method of domestication.At the same time,the two versions unanimously use the hybridization method.Secondly,from the perspective of reception effect,Stephen Owen's version is better than Yang Guobin's in the reconstruction of theoretical level,while Yang Guobin has more advantages in presenting the beauty of poetics.Thirdly,the translation strategy of Chinese literary theory classics will gradually move from domestication to foreignization to meet the aesthetic expectations of the readers.Therefore,to promote the translation and acceptance of Chinese literary theory,we put forward the following suggestions: Firstly,the integrity of Chinese literary theory needs to be guaranteed in translation so that readers can form a complete and comprehensive understanding and acceptance;Secondly,when consideration cannot be given to both the reconstruction of poetic level and theoretical level,priority should be given to the output and acceptance of theoretical level to meet the readers' expectations;Thirdly,the translator needs to grasp the reader's horizon of expectation and the aesthetic distance between the reader and the translation dynamically.Fourth,we should combine the translation strategy of domestication and foreignization,make full use of annotation and commentary to help readers supplement background knowledge and strengthen pre-understanding.
