In recent years,with the concept of reading literacy being introduced,people have a new understanding of reading.However,the cultivation of English reading literacy has not really attracted the attention of English teachers from primary schools.On the basis of cultivating pupils' English reading literacy,the effect of English picture book reading on pupils' English reading literacy will be discussed in this study.The research questions are:1)What effects does English picture book reading have on pupils' reading habits?2)What effects does English picture book reading have on pupils' reading experience?3)What effects does English picture book reading have on pupils' learning of language knowledge,specifically vocabulary knowledge?A pre-test questionnaire and a post-test questionnaire are carried out to find out the effects of English picture book reading on pupils' English reading habits and reading experience,a semi-structured interview is used to verify and explain the results.Four immediate vocabulary quizzes are conducted to explore whether English picture book reading has significant advantages in promoting vocabulary learning,a semi-structured interview is done to verify and explain the results.The major research findings are 1)The combination of guided reading and independent reading by using English picture books has remarkable effects on promotion of the pupils' reading habits in terms of reading frequency,reading quantity and reading behavior.2)English picture book reading has significant effects on enhancement of the pupils' reading interests.The picture books,selected from perspective of theme,plot,picture,quantity of characters,difficulty and typesetting,appeal to the pupils very much.The pictures stimulate the pupils' interests in virtue of their strong narrativity and fun for children.English picture books are mainly composed of pictures,supplemented by a small amount of words in each page,which relieves effectively the pupils' pressure of reading.3)English picture book reading doesn't have significant effects on promotion of the pupils' reading attitudes and self-assessments.English picture books easily cause the pupils' reading interests.However,to maintain the pupils' motivations and enhance their self-efficacy in English picture book reading,coordination between curriculum learning and picture book reading should be realized.In this regard,English picture books can be integrated with English textbooks to promote English learning.Meanwhile,a long-term guidance and practice in English picture book reading should be achieved to reinforce the pupils' awareness of English picture books' values in English learning.4)English picture book reading has obvious advantages in promoting the pupils' learning of word meaning and word usage.Compared with general reading materials,English picture books are more likely to cause pupils' reading interests and activate pupils' thinking,which makes it more effective to acquire word meaning and word usage.
