International Sign Linguistic,Usage, and Status Issues, edited by Rachel Rosenstock and Jeremy Napier,is an anthology of papers published by the American Gallaudet University Press in 2013.This translation project comes from the introduction and the first two articles of this book, the content of which covers the history, language structures, function and application,as well as relevant policies of International Sign. The source text emphatically expounds the status of International Sign and analyzes International Sign from the perspective of linguistics. The translation and introduction of this book have great significance to domestic researches on sign languages. The guiding theory of this translation practice is Peter Newmark's Text Type Theory(2001).After analyzing the function and features of the source text, the reporter classifies International Sign Linguistic,Usage, and Status Issues as an informative text.In view of the difficulties and challenges encountered in the course of translating, the reporter summarizes and analyzes some translation methods and techniques involved in the listed translation cases from the perspectives of proper nouns, technical words, long sentences, and passive sentences. For the translation of proper nouns, the reporter mainly adopts recognised translation and transference. For the translation of technical words, the reporter mainly uses proper wording, literal translation, and looking for equivalent; For the translation of long sentences, the reporter mainly employs sequencing, division, and reversing. For the translation of passive sentences, the reporter makes a flexible approach based on the specific contexts, rather than translating all of them into active sentences literally. The purpose is to convey the information of the source text accurately and naturally so as to realize the communicative intention. The reporter hopes this translation practice can provide reference material for sign language researchers or sign language amateurs. And at the same time, the reporter hopes that this report can be helpful and inspirational to other translators who are engaged in the translation of academic texts on sign languages.
