Freedom songs were the cultural production of the Civil Rights Movement and these songs expressed the injustice of segregation and racial discrimination and the black people's desire for freedom and equality. As a specific musical form, freedom songs were influenced by the black music tradition and the “popular front” culture during 1930 s.However, freedom songs could be seen as part of the Civil Rights Movement and the discourse of the movement was deeply shaped by these songs.Morever, freedom songs participated in mobilization of grassroot activities and promoted the collective identity of black people. When the Civil Rights Movement faded away in history, freedom songs became the symbol of the movement and the power of music even had a profound effect on the American social cultule.
