This practical report is based on the translation practice of the third chapter of the work Sing,Unburied,Sing by American novelist Jesmyn Ward.The third chapter mainly tells the story that the mother Leonie,her kids Kayla,Jojo and her friend Misty started from home,drove to the north,and went to the prison to pick up her husband Mike home,and stopped at the drug dealer’s house halfway.This report consists of three parts: introduction,case study and summary.The introduction includes the purpose and significance of translation task,the analysis of source text,the selection of translation theory,and parallel text and reference materials.This translation practice adopts communicative translation theory and semantic translation theory of Newmark.The main part of case study contains translation of nouns,translation of compound sentences and translation of rhetoric.Translation of nouns includes translation of proper nouns and translation of compound color words.Free translation and annotation are adopted to deal with the translation of proper nouns,and literal translation and free translation to deal with the translation of two different types of compound color words.Division,amplification and omission are used to make the translation of compound sentences more smooth to read.Translation of rhetoric involves the translation of parallelism and metaphor.Literal translation and free translation are adopted to make rhetoric translation more vivid and conform to the reading habits of Chinese readers as well.After finishing the translation of the third chapter of this book,the author realized that literary translation requires both the translator’s reading volume and literary literacy.In order to complete literary translation more proficiently,translators should read more,practice hard and improve the expression ability of Chinese and English.
