This report is a conclusion of the translation practice of the Preface and the first four chapters of The 5 am Club-Own Your Morning,Elevate Your Life.As the masterpiece of the world’s top leadership guru Robin Sharma,this book tells a typically inspirational story that a frustrated entrepreneur and a cynical artist meet a homeless man with eccentric behavior in an inspirational lecture who becomes their secret mentor later.The selected text uses a lot of dialogues and descriptions to present lively characters and convey thought-provoking philosophy in a subtle way.A lot of preparations have been made before the start of translation,including learning about the author’s life experience,grasping the content and style of the original work,establishing a proper noun comparison table and reading parallel texts.During the translation process,the translator analyzes the selected text by means of Peter Newmark’s translation typology and defines it as the vocative text with expression functions.Based on this,the translator determines the general strategy of translation,that is,enhancing the charisma of the translation which invites readers to think,understand and act,in addition to the accurate transmission of the content.The difficulties of this translation practice mainly lie in the variety of vocabulary,the complexity of syntax and the effect of rhetoric.Therefore,the translator chooses the communicative translation theory as the guiding theory for translating vocative texts and tries to make the translation smooth and consistent with Chinese expressions by taking into consideration the differences between English and Chinese and the flexible use of such translation strategies as word formation,free translation,split and reorganization.Through this translation practice,the translator finds that the communicative translation theory has a good guiding significance in inspirational texts,and hopes that this practical report can provide some inspiration for translators on the translation of similar texts.
