A Study Of City Linguistic Landscape And Image Construction Based On English And Chinese Public Signs

In recent years,linguistic landscape has become a hot topic in sociolinguistics and applied linguistics.Some foreign scholars have made great achievements in the field of linguistic landscape.In China,studies of linguistic landscape mainly focus on public signs.With the development of globalization,China is becoming more and more open to other countries.Public signs,as an important reflection of the appearance and international image of the city,play an important role in international exchanges.Therefore,more and more scholars and translators begin to pay attention to the English and Chinese public signs.However,most studies only focus on the English translation of public signs in China,few studies link public signs with the construction of city image.Under such a background,this thesis discusses the influences of linguistic landscape on the construction of city image from the perspective of public signs,and tries to put forward some strategies that are beneficial to the construction of linguistic landscape and city image.The thesis firstly sorts out the related researches at home and abroad.Secondly,a field survey is used to investigate the English and Chinese public signs of airports,high-speed railway stations and some tourist attractions in Beijing,Tianjin and Shanghai.A database of English and Chinese public signs is established by using the 684 collected datum.Finally,an inductive analysis method is used to analyze the database.Through classifying the translation errors of public signs,the thesis analyzes the influences of public signs on linguistic landscape and further analyzes the influences of linguistic landscape on the construction of city image.The major findings are as follows: Public signs affect the degree of internationalization and the spread of national culture of linguistic landscape.For airports and high-speed railway stations which have a high degree of internationalization,if the translation of public signs is inconsistent with the target language,the level of international service of the public signs will be reduced,then the degree of internationalization of the linguistic landscape will also be weakened.Therefore,in the construction of public signs and linguistic landscape,it is necessary to establish unified translation standards,improve the quality of translators and strengthen related supervision.As for tourist attractions,if the translation of public signsignores the cultural background,the national culture of the source language will be lost,and the characteristics of the tourist attractions will disappear,thus the spread of national culture will be affected.Therefore,in the construction of public signs and linguistic landscape,it is necessary to preserve the national culture of source language.The linguistic landscape influences the international image and national image construction of the city.The standard linguistic landscape can promote the construction of the international image.Strengthening the investigation and reference of target language and improving the level of international service of linguistic landscape are important methods for the construction of international image.The linguistic landscape with national characteristics can promote the construction of national image.It is important for the construction of national image to explore the national cultural characteristics and form a unique national cultural landscape.
