| The interpreting program consists of a simultaneous interpreting task of the speech entitled When the East Meets the West delivered by Jack Ma at the annual meeting of South China Morning Post and a report on the difficulties and coping tactics in the simulated interpreting process. The speech features the linguistic phenomenon of semantic default, which is a kind of special ellipsis and occurs as a semantic slot in form. Therefore, the main task of this project is to solve the difficulties caused by semantic default in interpreting process with feasible coping tactics. The interpreting difficulties are divided into two major categories, namely, the difficulties in interpreting cognitive default and the difficulties in interpreting socio-cultural default. The Interpretive Theory puts forward that interpreting is a triangular process, which can be divided into three states: comprehension,de-verbalization,and reformulation. The Interpretive theory does not take translation as a one-way decoding process from source language to target language, but as a dynamic process of understanding and re-expressing,which is of great importance to help tackle the main difficulties of this interpreting project.Under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory, the interpreter adopts six interpreting tactics to tackle the above mentioned difficulties, namely, paraphrasing, contextual amplification, suitable supplement,sense-for-sense interpreting, transliteration with notes, and intentional omission.Nowadays, researches on interpretation of semantic default are comparatively limited. This interpreting report is expected to give some practical advices in interpreting semantic default. |
