With the “cultural turn” of translation studies in the 1970 s,researches in translation field no longer only pay attention to the linguistic factors in the text, but also focus on some external factors affecting translation.Feminism,as one of these factors, has a direct effect on translation studies.Translation is accepted as a cultural study.Later, the combination of translation studies with feminism leads to the emergence of feminist translation theory.Feminist translation theory is based on the feminist movement and emphasizes the translator's subjectivity, and it has subverted the translation methods and expressions of translators in traditional translation theory. The study of the translator's subjectivity has got much attention in translation studies at home and abroad. Many scholars have focused on the translator's subjectivity from the perspective of Hermeneutics.Gender identity is an important part of translation studies. However, translators' subjectivity has not been paid enough attention from the perspective of gender. The study of translator's subjectivity from the perspective of feminist translation theory has its uniqueness. It takes the factor of gender into consideration, which has been neglected for quite a long time.Feminist translation theory,as the main practice theory in translator's subjectivity, profoundly reflects the translator's effect and positive role during the process of translation. There are five chapters in this dissertation. In the first chapter, the background, objective, significance and layout of this paper are briefly discussed.Next chapter is a brief introduction to feminist translation theory, translator's subjectivity and therelationships between them. The third chapter stresses the translator's subjectivity under feminist translation theory and the embodiment of the translator's subjectivity during the practice of feminist translation. This part provides the criteria for a comparative analysis of the next chapter. The fourth chapter focuses on three Chinese versions of The Joy Luck Club by means of the feminist translation theory. This part involves the translation methods of feminist translation theory: supplementing, hijacking, prefacing and footnoting,in combination with the translator's transformation among different dimensions to explore the embodiment of translator's subjectivity in The Joy Luck Club. The last chapter concludes the whole dissertation.Through comparative analysis, the author concludes that female and male translators give full play to the translator's subjectivity in the process of translation, but there also exists the excessive play of the translator's subjectivity. Therefore, the author puts forward some suggestions to avoid over exerting the translator's subjectivity in the process of translation.
