A Research On The Correlation And Resting-State Functional Connectivity Between Wechsler Intelligence And Memory

Objectives(1)Taking healthy adults as the subjects,the Wechsler adult intelligence scalerevised in China(WAIS-RC)and the Wechsler adult memory scale-revised in China(WAMS-RC)were used to evaluate the intelligence and memory of the subjects and explore the correlation between Wechsler intelligence and Wechsler memory performance.(2)Subjects were scanned by resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI),both the left and right of amygdala and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex were selected as the region of interest(ROI)separately to conduct whole-brain functional connectivity analysis.Differences in functional connectivity between groups with different intelligence and memory levels were compared to explore the common neural basis of intelligence and memory.(3)The correlation analysis between the performance of Wechsler intelligence and Wechsler memory and the strength of functional connectivity was conducted to explore the relationship between them from the perspective of behavior and brain function.Methods(1)Through WeChat public platform and posters,volunteers were recruited in accordance with the standards of recruitment.First,the subjects who met the requirements of the study were given a general questionnaire survey,and their basic information was collected.Then,to understand the intelligence and memory level of the subjects,they were given psychological tests by trained professionals on the Wechsler adult intelligence scale and the Wechsler adult memory scale.Finally,the subjects were scanned by resting state fMRI to obtain the data of the subjects.(2)On the basis of MATLAB R2014 a platform,DPARSF software was used to preprocess the resting state fMRI data,and REST toolkit was used to conduct whole-brain functional connectivity analysis based on the region of interest,and to test the differences between groups with different intelligence and memory levels.Finally,SPSS 22.0 software was used for statistical analysis of the data of scale and functional connection.Results(1)There was a significant correlation between Wechsler intelligence and Wechsler memory in different dimensions and total scores,and the correlation between full intelligence quotient(FIQ)and memory quotient(MQ)was the highest(r=0.51,p<0.001).MQ was moderately correlated with verbal intelligence quotient(VIQ)(r=0.48,p<0.001),but weakly correlated with performance intelligence quotient(PIQ)(r=0.34,p<0.001).(2)Functional connectivity was significantly enhanced in the high intelligence group.By the difference test of functional connectivity between the high intelligence group and the general intelligence group,it was found that when the left amygdala was taken as the ROI,there was no significant difference in the functional connectivity between the two groups.When the right amygdala was taken as the ROI,the left and right orbital inferior frontal gyrus,right insula,left posterior central gyrus,left supplementary motor area,right middle cingulate cortex showed significantly enhanced functional connectivity with the right amygdala in the high intelligence group.When the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was taken as the ROI,the functional connectivity of the left superior temporal gyrus,left middle temporal gyrus,left precuneus and left anterior central gyrus were significantly enhanced in the high intelligence group.When the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was taken as the ROI,the functional connectivity between the right orbital inferior frontal gyrus and the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was significantly enhanced in the high intelligent group.(3)Functional connectivity was significantly enhanced in the high memory group.The difference of functional connectivity between the high memory group and the general memory group showed that when the left amygdala was taken as the ROI,the functional connectivity of the right fusiform gyrus,left and right insula were significantly enhanced in the high memory group.When the right amygdala was taken as the ROI,the left fusiform gyrus,the left posterior central gyrus and the right insula showed significantly enhanced functional connectivity with the right amygdala of the high memory group.When the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was taken as the ROI,the functional connectivity of the left and right medial temporal gyrus,right superior temporal gyrus,left superior occipital gyrus,right calcarine cortex,and left posterior central gyrus were significantly enhanced in the high memory group.With the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex as the ROI,the functional connectivity of the left medial temporal gyrus,right fusiform gyrus,right superior temporal gyrus,left posterior central gyrus,and right superior occipital gyrus were significantly enhanced in the high memory group.(4)Both the high intelligence group and the high memory group showed significantly enhanced functional connectivity between the right amygdala and the right insula,the right amygdala and the left posterior central gyrus,and the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the left middle temporal gyrus.(5)The strength of functional connectivity between the right amygdala and the right insula was positively correlated with the subscales of WAIS-RC in arithmetic,digit symbol,drawing fill,and the subscales of WAMS-RC in associative learning.The strength of functional connectivity between the right amygdala and the left posterior central gyrus was positively correlated with the subscales of WAIS-RC in arithmetic,digit span,drawing fill,wood block graph,and the subscale of WAMS-RC in forward and backward.The strength of functional connectivity between the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and left middle temporal gyrus was positively correlated with the subscales of WAIS-RC in arithmetic and digit span,as well as the subscales of WAMS-RC in associative learning,comprehension memory and forward and backward.Conclusions(1)The MQ was the highest correlated with FIQ,and MQ is more closely related to VIQ than to PIQ.(2)The whole brain functional connectivity,with the amygdala and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex as the ROI,can reflect the differences between intelligence and memory,and the higher intelligence group and higher memory group have stronger functional connectivity.(3)The frontal-parieto network may be the common neural basis of intelligence and memory.
