A C-E Translation Report Of Local Records Of Ningbo

The source text of this translation report comes from the overview of Local Records of Ningbo in 1995 edition revised by Ningbo Local Codification Committee.It has a strong generality in content,introducing the basic situation of Ningbo City with overall perspectives.Though with a wide range of contents and great research value,few records have so far been translated.The author takes this translation report as an opportunity to make an attempt to translate local records.From the content of the text,the source text contains many culture-loaded words,such as geographic names,China’s imperial chronology,official titles & institutions,historical events,etc.Moreover,there are some differences between the two languages.For example,Chinese emphasizes parataxis with paratactic sentences or subjectless sentences,and it abounds in multiverbs,while English emphasizes hypotaxis with complete sentence components and rigorous sentence structure.Under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,the author explores proper translation methods,such as transliteration,amplification,part-of-speech conversion and voice conversion,and carries out case studies of the English version.For text type,the source text is a typical type of record.If translated into English,it has the function of publicity and can be considered as an introductory propagandist text.Therefore,great attention should be paid to the overall language style in the process of translation.The author writes this translation report into four chapters.The first chapter falls into three subsections to introduce the background of the report,the topic and its importance,and the process of translation.The second chapter is based on the source text and translation theory.It is divided into four subsections,presenting the contents and comments of Local Records of Ningbo and the analysis of excerpts as well as the theoretical analysis and application of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory.The third chapter discusses the difficulties of translation from lexical and syntactic levels,and combines specific cases.Finally,the author summarizes the benefits and enlightenment brought by this translation report.
