This report is based on the E-C translation practice excerpted from Papers in Culture Research. On the linguistic features of the source text, many expressions and clauses with a considerable density of nominalization make the E-C translation a hard task since there are a lot of differences in habitual dictions between English and Chinese. As a collection of academic papers, the source text can be considered as an informative text with its functions more content-focused.Thus,the translator must translate the text in a more explicit way on the basis of a clear understanding of those complicated structures with nominalization.Following a meticulous examination on background information, linguistic properties and the text type of the source text, the author of this report, under a cognitive-functional framework with Systematic Functional Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics, tries to recognize the cognitive mechanism underlying the process of nominalization and to crystalize its functions at ideational, interpersonal and textual levels, expounding the inherent relation between semantics and lexicogrammar demonstrated in nominalization. Then translation methods at different level are proposed with sufficient examples in the source text.By explaining the cognition and functions of English nominalization and employing the proper translation methods, this report is meant to be a significant widening of the current studies on nominalization and its translation, hoping to help translators not only improve their translation skills, but deepen their understanding of the significance of the systematic study for translation study.
