| Senior high school is an important stage to cultivate students’ English reading ability.The level of reading ability directly affects the comprehensive language abilities.English reading ability mainly examines students’ ability to obtain information,process information,identify and solve the problems.The characteristics of students’ physical and mental development require and call for autonomous reading and autonomous learning.Only to follow the regulation of students’ physical and mental development can get better teaching effectiveness.The cultivation of students’ autonomous reading ability in senior high school conforms to this rule and meets the needs of students’ comprehensive development.The purpose of the study is to explore the ways and effects of students’ autonomous reading ability in senior high school based on the problems existing in their English autonomous reading.In the thesis,research questions cover five aspects: attitudes,abilities,habits,strategies,and methods of autonomous reading,and the participants of the study are 90 students from two classes and 8 teachers from a senior high school.Through students’ questionnaires and teachers’ interview,the study investigates the situation and problems of autonomous reading ability in terms of students’ interest in reading,reading habits,reading strategies,and students’ self-monitoring and evaluation in the process of reading.The findings show that some problems exist among the students regarding autonomous reading,such as complex attitudes towards English autonomous reading,inappropriate reading habits,lack of reading strategies,low level of students’ self-monitoring and self-evaluation and unsuitable English reading environment.The study proposes some suggestions to cultivating students’ autonomous reading ability.The study also puts forward a proposal of establishing a students’ Resource Database of English Reading(RDER)to enrich reading resources.The findings and suggestions would be helpful to stimulate students’ subjective initiative and enthusiasm of autonomous reading. |
