The theory of autonomous learning is the marriage resulted from the development of such theories as modern educational psychology, especially humanism theory, metacognitive theory and constructivism theory. The cultivation of students’ autonomous learning ability largely depends on the development of extracurricular reading activities.According to the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition),the total amount of extracurricular reading for Grade nine students should reach 150,000 words, which requires teachers to actively guide students to carry out extracurricular reading, help students gradually acquire the ability of autonomous learning in reading, and eventually learn how to learn, thus laying the foundation for lifelong learning. Therefore,it may after all be accepted a feasible way to explore the teaching mode of“in-class instruction to extracurricular reading” for junior high school’s English extracurricular reading. This teaching model is based on the theory of autonomous learning by integrating theoretical principles of humanism, metacognition, constructivism and input hypothesis and what not.It focuses on reading task list, autonomous reading after class, and instruction in class,so as to improve the effectiveness of extracurricular English reading. This study mainly discusses the following three subject matter:(1)the status quo of junior high school students’ autonomy of extracurricular English reading;(2)the influence of the teaching mode of “in-class instruction to English extracurricular reading” based on the theory of autonomous learning on the improvement of students’ autonomous learning ability;(3)the effectiveness of the teaching model of “in-class instruction to English extracurricular reading” based on the theory of autonomous learning in the improvement of students’ English reading scores. This study lasted for four months,98 students from two parallel classes of Grade nine in a school are chosen as research participants. The teaching mode of “in-class instruction to English extracurricular reading” based on the theory of autonomous learning is carried out in the experimental class, while the control class adopts the traditional English extracurricular reading teaching. In order to increase the credibility of the study, questionnaires, tests and interviews are used in this study to understand the learning effects of students in the experimental class and control class. After the experiment,SPSS 26.0 and Excel are used to compare the achievement gap between the two classes and to verify the effect of the teaching experiment by analyzing the reading scores and questionnaire data of the experimental class and control class before and after the experiment. The results show that students’ extracurricular reading lacks autonomy and effective support;the teaching mode of “in-class instruction to English extracurricular reading” is helpful to improve students’ autonomous learning ability;the teaching mode of “in-class instruction to English extracurricular reading” can effectively improve students’ English reading scores. At the same time, this study believes that the main body of extracurricular autonomous reading is students, and the guiding role of teachers is mainly reflected in the following aspects:(1)to design reading task lists for students;(2)to stimulate the intrinsic motivation of students to read independently after class;(3)to cultivate students’ ability to manage learning resources;(4)to attach importance to the training of reading strategies;(5)to encourage students to self-monitor and self-evaluate themselves.
