| Nowadays, the increasingly frequent international academic exchanges have promoted the translation of English and Chinese academic texts, and the translation of academic texts is becoming more and more important.Academic texts have specific language styles and attach great importance to discourse coherence.Cohesion plays a vital role in the coherence of a text and is a significant criterion to measure whether a text is coherent. The application of cohesive devices in English and Chinese academic texts is varied and different. Therefore,it is necessary to study the differences in cohesive devices between English and Chinese academic texts and propose effective translation strategies for different cohesive devices. In this thesis, the author selects the preface and the first chapter of the English academic book Translation and Emotion-A Psychological Perspective for translation.Based on the latest cohesion and coherence theory put forward by Hu Zhuanglin in his book Textual Cohesion and Coherence(New Edition)published in 2017.Starting from four aspects of referential cohesion, structural cohesion, logical cohesion and lexical cohesion, this paper analyzes the cohesive devices in English academic texts, sums up the characteristics of cohesive devices in English academic texts, and puts forward the translation strategies of cohesive devices in English academic texts. The author finds that there are similarities and differences in cohesive devices between Chinese and English,The application of cohesive devices in Chinese academic texts that focus on parataxis is not as rich as that in English academic texts that focus on hypotaxis.English uses more cohesive devices such as conjunctions, pronouns, synonyms, antonyms and homonyms to connect texts, while Chinese relies more on paratactic devices such as thematic concept word groups to connect and coherence sentences. Therefore, through the translation of cohesive devices in the text, the author finally sums up seven main strategies, namely, perservation, amplification, explicit, adjustment of word order, negation, conversion of part of speech as well as omission. Finally,I hope this practical report can bring inspiration and help to translators of academic texts. |
