| Academic translation is of great significance in promoting the scholarly communication between cultural and linguistic groups. However, many a question occurs amidst the boom of the translation in question, among which readability stands out.Compared with texts of other types, academic ones pay more attention to logic, coherence and readability. The cohesion theory, put forward by Halliday and Hasan, greatly contributes to both the understanding of the logic of an original text and the enhancement of the readability of the translation. Therefore, how the cohesive devices are handled during the translating process determines the quality of the output. How to rebuild the reference, conjunction and lexical cohesion is the focus of the thesis for being the major obstacle facing the author’s translation practice. The thesis points out that translators are supposed to,on the one hand, make all the conjunctive cohesions explicit and employ completed antonymy, more precise onomatopoeic words and symmetric four-word idioms to construct cohesive devices so as to meet the Chinese readers’ expectation for academic materials and on the other hand, turn to simplified and diversified personal reference, clarified demonstrative reference and “peeled” or purified reiteration to reconstruct original cohesive devices to render the translation more readerfriendly.Currently, domestic application of cohesion theory to the enhancement of the readability of academic translation remains to be expanded with most researchers turning to FSP,deconstruction,eco-translatology,etc.Thus,the thesis is expected to inspire more valuable insights. |
