“Deverbalization” proposed by the Paris school points out that interpreting is to grasp the implicit meaning behind the form and structure of language.The Paris school of the Interpretive Theory of Translation believes that the object of interpreting is “sense”,not the form of language,because interpreting is an act of communication.Interpreting consists of three steps: comprehension of the source language,deverbalization and reproduction in the target language.Deverbalization is the core of the process.Deverbalization is the necessary and natural process of interpreting.Given the differences of the source language and the target language,the limited capability of memory and cognitive complement,interpreters need to deverbalize proactively to express what speakers mean.This paper studies a mock conference in which Ian Newton,a professor at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Geneva,gave a speech about refugees under the COVID-19 pandemic.The paper analyses successfully-deverbalized examples with measures put forward by previous studies and discusses unsuccessfully-deverbalized examples where the interpreter was restricted by the meaning of words and the structure of sentences.In the end,strategies are proposed to improve the ability of deverbalization.
