On The Image Of The "Civilized Savages" In Martin Amis's Novels

Martin Amis(1949-),one of the most influential contemporary writers in the Britain literature history,has created a series of images of "civilized savages" in his novel productions with some common characteristics of personality: a mere nobody in the society,lonely but isolated,apathetic but self-abandoned,mastering modern scientific knowledge but vainly trying to pursue endless material desires.Taking three representative novels:Dead Babies(1975),Money:a Suicide Note(1984),London Fields(1989)as research samples,this thesis investigates and studies a general concept of "civilized savages" in Martin Amis' s novels.Starting from the controversial image of " civilized savages " in the works,this thesis excavates the various ugliness of the characters,exposes the darkness of human nature,provides a new way of thinking for the understanding of the works and to further reveal Martin Amis' s questions and reflections towards the postmodern consumer society.This thesis mainly consists of the following five parts,the introduction reviews the life and works of Martin Amis,summarizes the research progress about Martin Amis' s works,and briefly demonstrates the research ideas and structural framework of this paper.Chapter 1 defines the definition of the " civilized savages " and discusses the typical characteristics of the image of " civilized savages ".Chapter 2 analyzes the writing skills of the three novels to shape the image of "civilized savages" from the original text.Chapter 3 focuses on the aesthetic value of the image of " civilized savages " from the aesthetic perspective.The conclusion summarizes the full text and explains that Martin Amis' s shaping of the " civilized savages " is the inheritance and integration of contemporary realism and post-modern experimental novels of the 20 th century.The " civilized savages " 's vigilance function and significant value towards the contemporary society is also pointed out.
