Based on the relevant theories of cross-cultural communication,this paper investigates and interviews South Asian students in China from four aspects:psychological adaptation,learning adaptation,life adaptation and communicative competence.The results of the investigation and interviews show that the adaptation of South Asian students to psychological adaptation,learning adaptation,life adaptation and communicative competence is in a good state as a whole.The best performance of South Asian students is communicative competence,followed by learning adaptation,psychological adaptation,and life adaptation.Through correlation analysis,it is concluded that there are significant correlations between the communicative competence of foreign students and psychological adaptation,learning adaptation,life adaptation,among which the most important factors affecting communicative competence are psychological adaptation and life adaptation.The influence of psychological adaptation was greater than that of life adaptation.There are no significant differences between these four aspects in age,education,Chinese proficiency,study abroad experience and graduation plan,but there are significant differences in different residence time in China.Based on the results of the survey,this paper puts forward specific suggestions for South Asian students to adapt to life and study in China.First of all,the suggestions for colleges and universities are as follows:to guide the admission of South Asian students in China;to improve the catering service for foreign students;to provide cross-cultural training for overseas students;to establish a platform for communication between foreign students and Chinese students;to optimize the teaching mode and methods of foreign students.Secondly,suggestions for foreign students are: improving their Chinese level;facing difficulties with a positive and optimistic attitude;strengthening physical fitness exercise;finding their hobbies;and actively understanding the social information of China.
