Comparison Of Guidance And Counseling Service Provision For Institutions Of Higher Education Students At EIT And ZJNU

This study investigated the status of guidance and counseling service provision for IHE students at EIT and ZJNU.The investigation was done comparing the guidance and counseling service provision centers practices of both institutions.Five main research questions were raised inline with the situated research objectives,which aimed in understanding the status of service,identifying the challenges facing the services and suggesting solutions that could overcome the challenges.Based on the investigation,the study further presented the similarities and differences of the guidance and counseling service provision practices between the two institutionsThe study used qualitative approach,which was suitable for the research purpose Triangulated method of data collection,structured interview,observation,and document analysis were applied to increase the validity of the study.Eight full time counselors were purposely selected and interviewed as participants of the study to enrich the inquired information.The data was coded,categorized,summarized and finally analyzed and presented thematicallyThe study found that both EIT and ZJNU have situated guidance and counseling provision centers.However,at EIT,the service is at its initial status in terms of both quantity and quality of the center,counselors and facilities.The finding shows that the guidance and counseling services offered at both institutions'centers,mostly focused on students' academic achievement and transition to higher education,while rarely or not focused on students' career planning and transition to work Several factors identified as possible challenges for the under-utilization of guidance and counseling service at both institutions.Accordingly,corresponding possible ways of overcoming the challenges were suggested by both institution's counselors.Further,the findings shows that the guidance and counseling services provision practices of both institutions have similarities and differencesThe investigation of this topic from cross-cultural perspective might have great significance to better understand the status of guidance and counseling provision for IHE students.It would be also a great value of reference for the development and construction of guidance and counseling service provision for IHE students.The explained similarities and differences between the two institutions' guidance and counseling service provision for IHE students could share an insightful experiences to improve the guidance and counseling service provision practices.Therefore,this study initiative could be important contribution for Eritrea guidance and counseling service provisionThe guidance and counseling service provision practices for IHE students recommended to be promoted to improve the students college life and after.This study obtained answers to the raised questions regarding the status of guidance and counseling service provision for IHE students at EIT and ZJNU.However,further research expected to establish the students' views about the service they are receiving from their respective institutions.
