Rowing is a traditional sport in the West, especially in the United Kingdom. It has a long history of rowing in western countries. This sport has the same form as the traditional Chinese boating "Dragon Boat Race",but in terms of competitive style, culture Connotation and other aspects are quite different.Guangzhou was the first city in China to come into contact with rowing. After Shanghai opened the port, the British brought the sport to Shanghai and began rowing on the Huangpu River and Soochow Creek. The first official rowing event was held in the Huangpu River in 1852.In order to develop rowing,Shanghai Rowing Club was formally established in 1863.After the establishment of the Club,a comprehensive charter was formulated to regulate the club's operations, with detailed rules on membership, payment of membership fees, custody and use of ships, composition of the committee, etc. After that, the Club started to organize all kinds of rowing competitions, especially the regular spring and autumn competitons. In the early days, these competitions were held on the Huangpu River and Soochow Creek. As the number of vessels increased and the scale of the competition increased, security became a problem that needed to be solved urgently. After the completion of Shanghai-Nanjing Railway,Shanghai Rowing Club moved the venue to Qingyang Port of Kunshan from 1906.In addition,Shanghai Rowing Club built a simple dock and pier on the Soochow Creek in the early stage of development. In 1903,it began to rebuild a spacious and beautiful comprehensive building, including the boathouse, clubhouse, interior Swimming pool, bathroom and other facilities. After the indoor pool was completed,Shanghai Rowing Club began to host other aquatics such as swimming, diving, water polo, etc.,which attracted a large number of members to join. Moreover,Shanghai Rowing Club used the buildings for a variety of activities, such as celebrating the coronation of the British King, hosting parties and private tea parties. After the fall of Shanghai, the club gradually dissolved, and events were also stagnant.Until 1945,with the defeat of Japan, the alien Club began to operate again, and Shanghai Rowing Club also opened a new chapter.Although of this period,Shanghai Rowing Club no longer held large-scale events, internal activities continued, and due to the complete supporting equipment,it became a place for foreigners to gather, chat, and entertain.Shanghai Rowing Club officially withdrew from the historical stage in 1952.As a favorite sport of foreigners, the prevalence of boating in Shanghai shows the discrimination and hegemony of the Westerners against the Chinese in some aspects. However, the Chinese observed the game curiously at the beginning, and joined the competition in the later stage, which promoted the development of modern sports in Shanghai. In addition, people have also borrowed from the operation of the General Conference for its more advanced management model, and have made continuous progress in the collision and exchange of Chinese and Western cultures, which has a profound impact.
