| OBJECTIVE : Diet therapy is the most basic treatment for Diabetes Mellitus(DM).Diet therapy is the diabetes mellitus.Currently the most adapted clinical method for treating Diabetes Mellitus diet therapy in China is,“The Diabetic Food Exchange” method,in which a patient’s diet is managed by calculating one’s Body Mass Index(BMI)to determine a patient’s basic food groups and daily portion allowances.Due to the complicated and intricate nature of these calculations, usually guided by the health professionals,it is uneasy for the patient to follow through his or her own health management even after being discharged by the hospital or health institutions. In order to achieve better management results among Diabetes Mellitus diet therapy patients,we propose an innovative combination of mobile applications technology(APP)with Traditional Chinese Medicine’s(TCM)Five-Elemental theory and current understandings in nutritional therapy.Furthermore, while the mobile application is specifically designed to personalize Diabetes Mellitus diet therapy patient’s diet therapy and enhanced by recipe recommendations based on Traditional Chinese Medicine fundamental theory, another supplemental project in which we developed, the “Food Exchange Lunch Box” is specifically adapted to the modern Chinese lifestyle. We hope by implementing our research projects,a Diabetes Mellitus patient can take action into his own health;adhering to his diet therapy by using the mobile application along with the lunchbox, thus successfully controlling the development of the disease.METHODS: This research begins from a systematic approach with literature review. We focus on the educational methods of Diabetes Mellitus dietary management;critical evaluation of these methods, results, and doctor-patient feedbacks. Then, through further literature reviews in current Traditional Chinese Medicine studies of Diabetes Mellitus. We develop the mobile application research project in accordance to the following: Traditional Chinese Medicine’s “Five-Elemental theory”,“Grains as Nourishment” based traditional dietary structure,“Tien-Ren” seasonal correspondence,“Chinese Dietary Guidelines(2016)”,“Chinese Type 2 Diabetes Guide(2017)”,“Food Exchange Method”,“Caloric intake control”,“Glycemic Indices”,“Glycemic Load”,and recipe development with application management tools to achieve results in Traditional Chinese Medicine integrated Diabetes Mellitus diet therapy. The mobile application uses Version 1.3.0 as the background management system,to create an interactive, simple operation,TCM-DM diet management tool.In accordance to experimental research, the “Food Exchange Lunchbox” and its guided recipes are conducted through 30 different common foods for diabetics. The raw and cooked states of various food items are measured by its volume and weight to determine the exact ratio and measurement of the “Food Exchange Lunchbox” thus quickly help users to determine the correct portion sizes of cooked food as guided by the mobile application.RESULT: The TCM-DM diet management mobile application project is completed and implemented through the integration of practical theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine and western diet therapy,to create an interactive, simple operation,TCM-DM diet management tool, which can ration cooked food and judge the diet balance quickly. The projects work together hand-in-hand easily to implement Diabetes Mellitus diet therapy diet management with simple recipes that are quantified by the product and the interactive mobile application platform.CONCLUSION: The design and function realization of the TCM-DM diet management mobile application project will improve the compliance of diabetes patients with diet treatment and achieve and maintain healthy diet behavior. To provide a feasible and convenient way for dietary treatment of diabetes mellitus in China. |
