| This report of translation practices studies Chinese translations of the information of French higher education institutions’ official websites as a case.Initiated by "Liu Fa Gong she",a website publishing information of French higher education institutions,this translation program is aiming at translating information of profiles,specialty settings,curriculum provision,admissions of those schools,including universities,engineering schools,art schools,etc.Introductions of these institutions,non-literary and informative,need to be clear and easy to understand.The texts selected for this report contain one university and three elite schools,in which the realm of education has involved French classic engineering education and art education.The texts can manifest the peculiarity of French higher education system,in which contain a great deal of courses’names,degrees’names and rich introductions of schools and universities.Due to the differences between the Sino-French educational systems,the difficulties of this mission mainly lie in the translations of terms related to titles of organizations and leagues,names of degrees and courses.To solve these problems,it could be based on French interpretations to adopt the way of conveying information to translate,while the terms without standardized translations would be selected an appropriate translation according to context and referring to existing translations.According to the type and nature of the text,which the aim of translating is to transfer information,the translations should strive to achieve functions of the text and reproduce the style of original text under the guide of functional theories of translation.The process of translation of this mission has been described and analyzed emphatically upon the difficulties encountered during the translation as well as the solutions and countermeasures,which could provide a meaningful reference for translating information of French universities and colleges and researches of these translations in the future.This report consists of three parts:the introduction,the body and the conclusion.The body is divided into three chapters:The first chapter introduces the assignment by describing the context of mission,the nature of texts and the requirements of mission.These translations,which are entrusted by the website "Liu Fa Gong she",focus on profiles,components,specialty settings and curriculum provisions of institutions.Additionally,admission and employment situations are in the task list of some institutions.These texts have clear logic and easy language.Lots of terms are applied in the presentations of courses and degrees.The initiator requires that the translations should be concise,comprehensive and precise,at the same time the information of courses and majors should be both in Chinese and French.The second chapter describes the process of translating consists preparations,executing process and works after translations.Before translating,it’s necessary to research the French higher education system and present situations of translations for information of French universities and colleges.And then it should be screening valuable information,which will be translated,according to the aim of the mission and type of the text.The executing process of translating develops in two steps:the first step is to translate all information and to discover difficulties,which the second step is to find the way to solve problems out by return in French materials.The works after translations include the self-corrections,review by initiator and upload texts translated after modifying.The third chapter firstly analyzes the difficulties during translating,then represents cases studies and makes a summary for the manners of terms translation at last.Examples to analyze are the titles of organizations and leagues,names of courses and degrees,requirements of admission and training opportunities.The difficulties of this translation mission mainly reside in how to translate the terms relative to organizations,leagues and curriculum.This chapter describes the translating process of these terms by using a method based on term translating standards and properties of term under the perspective of functional theories of translationIn the conclusion,it is summarized of the experiences and the shortcomings of these translations.Meanwhile,it discusses the qualities that a translator should have briefly. |
