The 19th-century Romantic Period was important to landscape paintings development.The Romanticism's ideological principles celebrate people's spiritual values,strive for the individual liberation and human rights,and advocate individuality,characteristic depictions,and emotional expressions in paintings.In the latter half of the 18 th century,Rousseau pioneered the slogan of "returning to nature" and stirred up the soul of a generation.The delightful beauty of natural scenery attracted the attention of romantic artists.Later,romanticism changed the landscape painting,making it become a way for artists conveying spiritual emotions and inner experiences,which provided the author with a perspective to study romantic landscape painting in the 19 th century,and explore the development significance of romantic landscape painting under the combination of emotion and scenery.This paper takes the representative works of Friedrich,Turner and Constable in the Romantic period of the 19 th century as the start point,and the landscape paintings of romanticism focused on the combination of nature and spirituality in the 19 th century as the object,which is divided into four parts progressing in a gradual way:The first part gives a brief summary and description with representative painters to the romanticism landscape paintings focusing on emotional expression in terms of history,society,science and technology and natural aesthetics.In the second part,representative and excellent romantic landscape painters and works in the 19 th century are analyzed in details,and related deeper spiritual connotations are expounded.The third part is the key of this paper.This paper analyzes characteristics of the romanticism landscape paintings art creation,takes expression of artists' spiritual feelings and finding spiritual development tendency in nature as direction,and focuses on the expression factors of the visual language in the romanticism landscape paintings---form factors and spirit factors.From factors included light and color,brushwork,composition of a picture and other basic elements of visual language transformation,but spirit factors are through use of symbols and drawing visual language of main body's emotion projection to express artists' understanding of man and nature as well as man and social relations,conveying deeper spiritual connotations.Through the study of the three romanticism landscape painters,The fourth part considers what makes the landscape painting develop during the Romantic period of the 19 th century,and from the perspective of modern aesthetics,to view these three romantic landscape artist works,and discover that the expression of artist not only change the way artists seeing nature and reshape the harmony of man and nature,but the most is that artists project their demands of an ideal society in the landscape paintings.In a certain sense,it makes the landscape paintings not only the simple depiction of natural attributes but endows the landscape paintings with spiritual meaning.
