From The Perspective Of Logic, The Wei-Jin Metaphysical "The Debate Of Words And Meaning"

The distinction between words and meanings in metaphysics of Wei and Jin Dynasties is an important topic in the history of Chinese logic,and words and meanings are also a relatively important category in the history of Chinese logic.Simply put,the relationship between "speech" and "meaning" mainly discusses the relationship between language and thinking.For a long time,scholars have maintained a high degree of enthusiasm in discussing the issue of "words" and "meanings",and have written books to express their unique position.The "distinction between words and meanings" of metaphysics in Wei and Jin Dynasties is profound and delicate.It involves not only epistemological and methodological issues in the philosophical perspective,but also immeasurable contributions to the development of literature,aesthetics and other disciplines.Therefore,scholars' comprehensive interpretation from different dimensions makes this issue constantly burst out with new vitality.This paper attempts to re-examine this old but vibrant topic from a logical perspective.Because of the fuzziness and uncertainty of "words" and "meanings" in metaphysics of Wei and Jin Dynasties,they were given different meanings in different logical contexts.This paper chooses Xun Jian,Wang Bi and Ouyang Jian,three representative figures who have concentrated their views,restores the logical context at that time,and tries to sort out the meaning of the concepts of "words" and "meanings" in different ideological contexts.At the same time,it logically analyzes the theory of "utmost meaning" and "incomplete meaning" which seems to be agreed upon by scholars in the past.It is imperative to reflect on the issue of "the distinction between words and meanings" in metaphysics of the Wei and Jin Dynasties in a new era,since “the Utmost Meaning of words” can not be simply summarized and understood as just “the Utmost Meaning of words.”...
