| Ryunosuke Akutagawa is a representative writer in the Taisho period of Japan. His works are mostly short stories. In 1922,Akutagawa published the novel "In the Bamboo Forest",which told a murder case in the bamboo forest with the confession testimony of four case-related persons and three case-parties.Among the contradictory testimony,it constructs a "suspended case" which is difficult to find out the truth. The plot of this story is based on the collection of Japanese classical works,"Konjaku monogatari",in the form of creation,it draws on the dramatic monologue style of the two western works,"The Ring and the Book",and " The Moonlight Road".However, the ending of the work which without a definite truth is different from that of the former three. In 1951,the well-known Japanese director Kurosawa Akira’s film Rashomon, based on the script prototype of "In the Bamboo Forest",also gave the truth of the case.Compared with the above works, the story of "In the Bamboo Forest" is different because of its "unknown truth",which is exactly one of the reasons why it can become such a classic work that still popular today.Since the publication of "In the Bamboo Forest",the issue of "truth" in the work has always attracted the attention of academic circles.Although the discussion of "truth" has undergone a transformation from "truth can be sought" to "no truth in the story",the latter has not become a conclusion.Until recent years, there are still researchers trying to prove the unique truth of the "suspended case" in the story from various perspectives.I believes that there is no unique truth in the "suspended case" of "In the Bamboo Forest".The "unknown truth" is the ingenious design of Akutagawa. The final "truth" of the work is that there is "no truth" in the work.At present, although there are a lot of studies on the viewpoint of "no truth in the work",the research angle mostly regards "no truth" as the premise rather than the object of argument. The scope of the study is basically limited to a single discussion of the text itself, and the content of the study seldom touches on the cause of "no truth".In view of the above problems,I will try to make a more comprehensive and systematic exposition to provide multi-dimensional support for the establishment of "no truth" viewpoint. This article is divided into three chapters, from inside and outside of the work,to fully demonstrate the "no truth" viewpoint.Chapter one clarifies the view that there is no truth in this work at first. In terms of thematic content, comparing the work with "Konjaku monogatari",and in terms of creative techniques, comparing the work with "The Rings and the Book" and " The Moonlight Road",thus highlighting the theme and purpose expressed by the "no truth" of "In the Bamboo Forest".At the same time,by comparing the "truth" ending of the film Rashomon, the artistic charm of "no truth" of "In the Bamboo Forest" is emphasized. In the second chapter, from the perspective of narratology,by comparing with the narrative characteristics of the other four "giving truth" works in chapter one,the narrative characteristics of "no truth" are discussed from three aspects: perspective, narrator and narrative receiver, and open structure.Chapter three, focusing on the external background of the creatin of "In the Bamboo Forest",explores the author’s creative mentality from three aspects: Akutagawa’s life experience, emotional experience and literary situation, and clarifies the reasons for the "no truth" of this work. |
