In recent years,square dance has been popular throughout the country.It is performed by the folks in streets and square parks,no matter in prosperous cityor the remote countryside.Especially for rural areas,square dance not only becomes an important way for human beings to entertain,but also occupiesa significant position in all kinds of cultural performances.The day-to-day space practice of dancers not only deepens the interaction between each other,but also shares emotions and meanings,forming a unique square symbol,which plays an irreplaceable role in rural life.Based on the theory of constitutive community communication and spatial communication as the research perspective,this study considers square dance as a community and square as a medium.The behavior of dancers in L village square dance in North China is described and analyzed by the means of participatory observation and in-depth interviews,that by the help of these operations,we,manage to analyze its social significance.The study found that,the square has penetrated into the villagers’ daily life as a space medium,providing dancers with a gathering place,an interaction platform,and a meaning-sharing space.In this field,the dancers’ interactive behaviors participate in the construction of the community network.On the one hand,people communicate around dance,automatically obey the dancing rules of "jump forward,follow behind",develop a circle interaction mechanism between youth and age,and weave a network of community relationships in the invisible.On the other hand,as a result of communication and interaction,dancers are involved in the public square dancing with daily rituals.A web of meaning in the community is woven under the condition of the sense of membership and perception of affiliation obtained from self-identification outside family by the means of role transition,which promotes the generation of community identity.Meanwhile,as a type of space practice,square dance Links people with space.The dancer’s communication and interaction also promotes the production and extension of spatial meaning.The square has become an incubator of social relations and an important area for dancers to express themselves.On the one hand,this sociaL relationship is reflected in the change from village neighbors to dancers,from the captain to the team members.the dancer’s social network has been expanded,and interest has become another factor that affects villagers’social relations after blood and geography.On the other hand,the square has become an important area for dancers to express healthy and happy,gaina sense of space atmosphere,and escape from daily life.Therefore,the square has become a multi-dimensional meaning space.
