Regarding Tomic, the champion of Chengdu ATP250 Tournament 2018,and Fognini, the runner-up as the objects of research, conclusions are drawn through comparative analysis on their kinematic parameters through3-dimensional video analysis on their forehand stroke returns which are selected by Gaotai software and recorded by a high-speed camera in the final.According to the statistics of returning,it is concluded that both of the players use strokes the most frequently to hit a return but Tomic has a lower percentage than Fognini does.Through the analysis of their motions, the conclusion can be drawn that Fognini has a better motion of forehand stroke for returning than Tomic does.1 The phase of spilt-step for preparationTomic does the spilt-step by his left foot and Fognini his right foot. When their feet jump off and forefeet touch the ground, the angles of Tomic's left and right hips and knees are smaller than Fognini's.At this stage,it cost Tomic and Fognini respectively 0.16 s and 0.28 s.Tomic has a shorter distance of spilt-step than Fognini does as Tomic jumps and remains in the air shorter than Fognini does.At this phase,as their forefeet touch the ground,Tomic has a smaller pedal extension than Fognini does as the ratio between Tomic's body gravity height and height is smaller than Fognini's.2 Backswing phaseAt the moment when their backswing reaches the maximum,Tomic has a smaller torso rotation than Fognini does and Fognini can fully lengthen his muscle groups for more elastic potential energy. The increasing angle of their elbows lengthens the acting distance of the rackets. At the moment when their backswing reaches the maximum, the angle between Tomic's racket and arm is smaller than Fognini's,leaving him a shorter backswing distance than Fognini. The speed of each joint of Tomic and Fognini's holding arm gradually increases from the proximal end to the distal end but Tomic's speed is lower than Paganini's.3 The phase of swing and contactAt this phase,Tomic has a smaller torso rotation than Fognini does. The angle of Tomic right shoulder and elbow descends while that of Fognini's right shoulder increases and his elbow decreases. Both of the players increase the angular velocityof their shoulder joint. When their backswing goes to the maximum and on the contact,Tomic has a lower contact and a higher backswing than Fognini does, which limits his forward-swinging motion, while Fognini has more adequate upward and forward motions which help him complete his swinging motion better.Tomic's racket speed is 15.13m/s and his ball speed 16.92m/s while Fognini's racket speed is18.57m/s and his ball speed 17.20m/s because Tomic returns faster serves than Fognini does which generate faster returns on the contact for Tomic than Fognini.4 The phase of follow-throughAt this phase, both of them swing the rackets forward and upward and push the returned ball in the direction of receiving by their holding arms, which lengthens the acting time of racket on the ball and makes them stable for the next shot. Both of the players have good motions at this phase. In conclusion,Fognini has a better motion of forehand stroke for returning than Tomic does.
