I read or heard once the best age to send people to battle is late teens or early twenties because they are smart and strong enough to fight and naive enough not to ask why. Most male Mormon missionaries leave home at nineteen. And, for the most part, this is true of them as well. I went on my mission because I saw nearly every other male in my hometown go. Because I was expected to. Because I wanted to be a hero. Because I knew that the church was true. But mostly because I wanted my father to live. What follows is a memoir that explores my connections and disassociations with my family, my hometown and my religion.
