Reliable data is available on the multiaxial response of conventional materials. However there has been limited investigation on the multiaxial response of composites. In the present study, a procedure to optimize a cruciform shaped specimen using finite element analysis has been developed. The AS4/3501-6 carbon/epoxy laminate for the specimen had a layup of [0/90]10s . Eight specimen geometries were analyzed, four having round gage section, while the other four having square gage section. The geometric parameters influencing the bypass load were identified. The effect of geometric parameters on factors such as stress riser and stress homogeneity was also noted.
