Abstract/Summary:
Modern sanitary landfills are designed with impervious liners to minimize the potential for groundwater contamination. Leachate recycle is an effective method of leachate treatment and landfill stabilization. Numerous mathematical models have been developed and used with limited success to simulate landfill stabilization and leachate quality. This work presents the mathematical model of BOD{dollar}sb5{dollar} concentration without and with leachate recirculation. Fourth-order differential equations and Runge-Kutta solution method are used to achieve the numerical solution of leachate quality.; Numerous computer simulation runs were conducted to fit the BOD{dollar}sb5{dollar} data published by Pohland et al. (1975) for an experimental landfill. Using the physical parameters of landfill and hydrological data, the reaction rate constants, the solid waste stabilization rate in a given sanitary landfill, and concentration of BOD{dollar}sb5{dollar} in the leachate are calculated as time dependent variables. The model results can be used for landfill design, operation, maintenance and closure plan.
