| The aim of this experiment was to achieve cost reduction and, improvement in the performance of the MedallionRTM blow molded seat and back through reduction in cycle time and material modification. This was examined by using coupling agent in various percentages; 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00% with the base resin at four different processing temperatures. Tensile, flexural and impact testing showed an increase in tensile strength at break, impact and a decrease in flexural strength with increasing coupling agent concentration. The blow molded products molded with coupling agent resulted in a 22% reduction in the cycle time without much variation in the final properties. The savings in reduction of processing temperature and cycle time was a significant improvement over the option of recycling, opted in the blow molded industry due to the high scrap generated during extrusion blow molding. The cost recovery from recycling is much less than the cost recovery from converting waste to energy. Other properties did not show significant variations. |
