Objective: To investigate the correlation of serum total bile acids level with essential hypertension and its target organ damages. Methods: In the retrospective study,479 participants aged ≥ 18 years hospitalized in our department and department of cardiology during November 2017 to October 2018 were involved, including 313 patients with confirmed essential hypertension(EH)and 166 patients without EH.Serum bile acids levels were measured and compared between EH and non-EH group, and binary regression analysis was used to discuss potential influencing factors of EH.the indicators of renal, carotid and cardiac structural damage was compared between EH group patients with high bile acid(n=197)and patients with low bile acid(n=116).Results: 1.The median serum TBA level of participants is 3.9 umol/L,55.7%(267/479cases)were in the high bile acid status.2.The level of TBA was significantly higher in EH group than in non-EH group(4.6 vs.2.9 umol/L,P< 0.01).3.The TBA levels of patients in the hypertension level 2 and 3 groups were significantly higher than those in the hypertension level 1 group(P<0.01).4.There was a weak positive correlation between TBA and 24-hour blood pressure variation coefficient(0.1<r<0.3,P<0.05).5.There were statistically differences between high bile acid group and low bile acid group(P>0.05)in cystatin C,ventricular septal thickness, left ventricular posterior wall thickness, left atrial diameter and left ventricular mass index. Conclusions: 1.The TBA level is significantly higher in patients with EH especially with stage 3 EH than in non-EH ones.2.TBA was associated with renal, cardiac structural damage.
