Influencing Factors Of Suicidal Ideation In College Students

Suicide is the main cause of death for the general population and the second most common cause of death for Chinese college students.According to statistics,the proportion of abnormal deaths among Chinese college students is suicide,but the root cause of young people’s suicide is still unclear.Suicidal ideation is the main risk factor of college students’ suicide,and even slight suicidal ideation will develop into extreme suicidal attempt.The incidence of suicidal ideation among Chinese college students is12.7%.A recent national study found that more than 20% of young people reported that they had considered suicide at some stage in their lives.This fact proves that suicide should not be underestimated.Understanding the key risk factors affecting suicidal ideation can provide information for suicide theory and help to take appropriate measures to prevent suicide attempts in the future.This study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore the relationship between Chinese life events,defeat and entrapment and suicidal ideation of college students.The paper includes two studies.The first study explores the mechanism of defeat and entrapment in the relationship between life events and suicidal ideation by means of cross-sectional quantitative research;The data of 631 college students were collected by questionnaire,among which the measuring tools used were Adolescent Life Events Questionnaire,Defeat Scale,Beck Suicide Ideation Scale,Entrapment Scale and Beck Depression Scale.The results showed that:(1)Life events positively predicted suicidal ideation.(2)Defeat mediates the relationship between life events and suicidal ideation.(3)Entrapment has no mediating effect between life events and suicidal ideation.(4)Defeat and Entrapment do not play a chain mediating role in life events and suicidal ideation.The second study is a qualitative study,which uses interviews to further explore the inner experience and cognitive characteristics of college students with suicidal ideation.Studies have shown that individuals with suicidal ideation have the following characteristics:(1)Individuals with suicidal ideation are in the situation of superposition of stressful life events,and family relationship is the main pressure.(2)Individuals with suicidal ideation experience defeat when they cannot solve problems.(3)Death liberation.(4)Negative self-evaluation.This study shows that: life events indirectly affect college students’ suicidal ideation after frustration;Qualitative research also verified the importance of life events and frustration in understanding the influence of college students’ suicidal ideation,and found the cognitive characteristics of death liberation and negative self-evaluation of college students with suicidal ideation.
