Suicide is a public health problem of global concern, and the total number of suicides among college students has been on the rise in recent years, with college students becoming a group that cannot be ignored.Although previous studies have shown insomnia and suicide risks a strong association, there is still insufficient research on the psychological mechanisms. In addition, reasons of living may impacts on entrapment and suicide risks. To further investigate the psychological mechanisms of insomnia and suicide risk, the present study used insomnia as a predictor variable and suicide risk as an outcome variable, and college students as the research object to discuss the effect of insomnia on suicide risk, the serial mediating role of defeat and entrapment, and the moderating role of reasons of living. This study was divided in two parts: Study 1 explored the relationship between insomnia and suicide risk, and examined the mediating role of defeat and entrapment and the moderating role of reasons of living in the second half of the model(entrapment-suicide risk).3 A longitudinal survey of 3699 college students was conducted for 18 months by using the Youth Self-Rating Insomnia Scale(YSIS),Suicidal behaviors questionnaire-revised(SBQ-R),The short defeat and entrapment scale(SDES)and Brief Reasons for Living inventory(BRFL).The study showed that:(1)The suicide risk rate of college students(total score ≥ 7 critical points)is6.1%,and there are differences in gender, the only child or not,the family location, physical health and the frequency of drinking alcohol.(2)Insomnia was positively correlated with defeat, entrapment and suicide risks, and all negatively correlated with reasons of living.(3)In the moderated serial mediation model with insomnia as the independent variable and suicide risks as the dependent variable, defeat and entrapment acted as serial mediating role.(4)The relationship between entrapment and suicidal risk was significant for students with low level of suicidal reasons. However,it was not significant for students with high level of suicidal reasons.Reasons of living moderates the effect of entrapment on suicide risks. In the second study, structured interview was used to deeply explore the relationshipTo sum up,individuals who suffer from insomnia for a long time will increase their risk of suicide if they continue to feel defeated and entrapped, and the reasons for survival can play a protective role in it.Therefore, the results of this study have theoretical and practical significance for colleges and universities to intervene in college students’ suicide, such as between insomnia and suicide risks. And after a qualitative study of each variable in Study 1,and 20 college students with severe insomnia were randomly selected for interviewed. The interview results showed that(1)The main symptoms of insomnia in college students are difficulty in falling asleep, waking up easily at night, lack of sleep, affecting the daytime function.(2)With insomnia, individuals are more prone to negative emotions, defeat, and inability to extricate themselves from the negative state, increasing the individual’s sense of entrapment and inability to change the status quo, further exacerbating the risk of suicide among college students, but at the same time strong reason of living can alleviate the possibility of individual suicide.carrying out insomnia intervention activities and increasing life education courses.
