An Interpretation Of The Phenomenon Of Suicide

The 1920 s and 1930 s were a crucial period of social transformation in modern China.In this period,with the continuous penetration of modernity,various social problems and social contradictions emerge in an endless stream.Among them,suicide is the most typical problem,which has aroused widespread concern and discussion in the society.From the phenomenon of suicide in this period,we can see that suicide behavior is not only related to individual personality,mentality and experience,but also closely related to social environment factors.Taking the suicide news in the Times from 1927 to 1937 as the research object,this paper intends to make a brief introduction to the phenomenon of suicide in Shanghai,and analyze the influence of the objective factors such as the time,society,family and culture on the behavior of the suicide,and reveal the gender characteristics and class differences of suicide behavior.As one of the first cities to open ports in modern China,the seriousness of the suicide problem in Shanghai became increasingly prominent,which was often reported in the news at that time.This is closely related to the environment in which it is located.In the process of the rapid social transformation and the change of values,it was difficult for people to get rid of the state of unemployment and poverty,and the contradictions and conflicts in marriage and family gradually increased,which made the suicide problem more prominent in this period.From 1927 to 1937,the suicide incidents in Shanghai published in The Times,to some extent,indicated the seriousness of the suicide problem in Shanghai.For example,the number of suicides kept increasing and the age of the suicides was mainly young and middle-aged.This paper studies the suicide news of the Times from the following aspects;First,a statistical analysis was used to investigate the overall suicidal behavior of both sexes.Secondly,it analyzes the causes of suicide behavior from three aspects: the conflict between old and new ideas of marriage and love,the reform of family system and ideas,unemployment and living difficulties.Finally,it analyzes the deep reasons behind the phenomenon of suicide,and expounds the influence of the lack of survival capital,gender role difference and gender status inequality on the phenomenon of suicide in this period.In this regard,the study of the suicide phenomenon in the s and s,for the elimination of gender inequality and gender discrimination in today’s society,better prevention of suicide behavior,has a certain reference significance.
