Objective To investigate the value of the modified Stoppa approach(MSA)in patients with pelvic or acetabular fractures. Methods We have collected clinical data from 26 patients. And between January 2015 and June 2020,these people are treated at the Ningxia Medical University General Hospital through a method called MSA due to pelvic or acetabular fractures. And the data included 16 patients with pelvic fractures and 10 with acetabular fractures. Then,we evaluated these patients in terms of perioperative parameters, postoperative reduction quality, postoperative functional recovery, and postoperative complication rate.Meanwhile,we selected 26 patients with the same gender, similar age,and similar fracture types who received the ilioinguinal approach(IA)during the same period for evaluation of these four aspects. Finally,we compared the data between the IA group and the MSA group. Results In terms of perioperative period, compared with IA,MSA has advantages in incision length, operation time, intraoperative bleeding and postoperative drainage(P all <0.05).Nonetheless,there was no statistical distinction in hospital stay among the two groups(P > 0.05).As for reduction quality, postoperative function score and incidence of postoperative complications, there was no statistical distinction between the MSA group and the IA group(P all > 0.05).Conclusion Compared with IA,MSA has the advantages of smaller incision, shorter operation time, less intraoperative bleeding and less postoperative drainage.Meanwhile,MSA does not reduce the quality of surgical reduction, affect the recovery of postoperative function, and increase the probability of surgical complications. What’s more,MSA combined with iliac fossa approach(iliac fossa approach,IFA)can treat complex acetabular or pelvic fractures. However, the application of MSA has its limitations and can’t completely replace the clinical application of IA.
