Since the implementation of the policy of reform and opening up in 1978,China’s international exchanges with other countries have been on the rise, thus generating a growing need for interpreting services.Liaison interpreting is often used when two or more people from different countries are engaged on such occasions as tour, medical care settings and business meetings. In that case, the conversation is less formal;the interpreter has to interpret swiftly;the participants(including the interpreter)stay close to each other to exchange ideas and adjust their speech according to the listener’s reaction.Hence, the interpreter enjoys relatively high flexibility while interpreting, and thus availing himself of the application of the interpreter’s subjectivity to interpreting. This paper is a report based on the author’s field practice as an interpreter.Through the analysis and the reflection of the author’s performance, the author attempts to examine the application of the interpreter’s subjectivity in the interpreting activities:First, the interpreter’s subjectivity incorporates the interpreter’s subjective ability and the passive factors(constraining the interpreter’s performance);Second, the interpreter’s subjectivity is affected by:the interpreter(lingual and interpreting competence, and mentality),the source language and the speaker and the listener. Finally, the interpreter can be well prepared for the interpretation work by short term pre-task preparation and improve his or her bilingual competence through long term pre-task preparation. The interpreter should be well adapted to the circumstances while carrying out the interpretation. Moreover, the interpreters can produce better performance if they study their previous interpretations and eliminate the flaws.
