Andre Lefevere, one of the representatives of the Manipulation School, points out, translation does not happen in a vacuum, instead to some extent is a manipulation, that is a rewriting of the original version. Therefore, the process of translation will be influenced by cultural factors such as ideology, poetics and patronage, etc. The novel Fu Sang was written by Geling Yan,a famous contemporary Chinese-American writer. After they were published, both the original version and the translated one have been popular and gained much praise among the readers.Based on Lefevere’s manipulation theory, the thesis chooses Cathy Silber’s The Lost Daughter of Happiness as the case study. The thesis makes a comparative study between the original novel and its translation, combining with the concrete examples,to analyze and discuss the influence and the manipulation of ideology, poetics and patronage on the choice of the translated material, the translator’s strategies in the process of translating as well as the publishing and publicity of the English version, from several aspects such as folk customs, style of texts, the rewriting of wording, syntax and the change of the original works’ title, etc. The thesis makes an attempt to study Geling Yang’s novel Fu Sang from the perspective of Lefevere’s manipulation theory, hoping that can arouse more readers’admiration for and interest in this original novel, make more scholars begin to attach importance to and study its English version as well as offer a certain reference for the relevant study of the manipulation theory later.
