| With the deepening of economic globalization,exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and foreign universities have become more common than ever before.And the English university profile in Chinese university website is one of the perfect platforms for China’s colleges to promote themselves to the world.So,the role of the Chinese-English translation of the Chinese university profile to establish university image and enhance its international competitiveness has been particularly important.Based on Adaptation Theory which was firstly put forward by Verschueren,taking foreign mainstream university profiles as parallel texts and analyzing them,this research tries to find out the common translation errors in the course of translating Chinese university profile into its English version and aims to improve the translating level.The common translation errors are linguistic and cultural translation errors.The linguistic translation errors refer to the incorrect uses of vocabulary,rhetoric and discourse structure while the cultural mistakes mainly refer to the cultural misunderstanding or conflict in the translation.Adaptation Theory can effectively guide the C-E translation of the Chinese university profile in its website.Verschueren thinks that the language use is a constant process of making language choices.And he suggested that people could study language use from the four pragmatic perspectives like Contextual Correlates of Adaptability,Dynamics of Adaptability,Structural Objects of Adaptability and Salience of the Adaptation Process.The author maintains that,in the C-E translation of the university profile,the translator should take the English Contextual Correlates of Adaptability,the Structural Objects of Adaptability(the cultural world and physical world),and the translator’s self-adaptation into consideration.Only by these adapting,can the foreign readers understand and accept the university profile of English version. |
