A Report On The Translation Of Translation And Language:Linguistic Theories Explained (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

This is a report based on the translation of excerpt of Peter Fawcett’s work Translation and Language: Linguistic Theories Explained.The selected source text briefly introduces the love-hate relationship between linguistics and translation theory,as well as 4 groups of linguistic concepts in connection with translation.Meanwhile,it also presents some linguistic issues related to the sound translation.In view of the frequent use of linguistic terminologies,personal names,long and complex sentences and passive voice,Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory is mainly used as the guiding theory in the translation project.Besides,the whole process of translation is described,and examples are given to illustrate how to use the functional equivalence theory to deal with difficulties encountered in the process of translation and how to adopt different translation skills to resolve these difficulties in translation.The report is divided into 4 parts.The first part introduces the translation task,including the background and the significance of the project.The second part analyzes the content and characteristics of the text.The third part is a detailed description of the difficulties encountered in the translation process and of the solutions,respectively,from the lexical,syntactic and discourse levels through the specific case analysis.The fourth part is the conclusion of the translation project and some problems to be solved in the future.
