| Individuals tend to seek and accept advice from others rather than independently when making decisions.Previous researches on advice taking mainly focused on decision makers, advisors, but few on the advice itself. This study focuses on the advice itself and explores the effect of intuitive advice on the advice taking.Traditional research generally believes that rational processing is better than intuitive processing. In cognitive science, rationality is considered as an information processing based on controlled, logic and rules, while intuition is described as a processing based on automatic, emotional and personal criteria. But intuition can solve many problems that it becomes crucial in times of emergency and in the face of uncertain events. So,in the process of advice taking, how does the decision maker view the intuitive advice provided by the advisor? Will decision makers adopt intuitive advice and under what conditions will intuitive advice be adopted?Based on previous researches, this study explored the effect of intuitive advice on the advice taking through three parallel experiments.Experiment 1 explored the influence of intuitive advice on advice taking under time pressure.Experiment 2focused on the influence of intuitive advice on advice taking when the advisor has experience or not.Experiment 3 explored the influence of intuitive advice on advice taking in different task difficulty conditions. The first two experiments used the estimate task of the urban population. While the experiment 3 used the estimate task of the distance between Chinese cities, that is,a map was presented, and the participants were asked to estimate the distance between two cities in the given map.The first experiment adopted the choice task paradigm, which the participants needed to choose the correct answer from the four options referring to a given advice.WOA is used as a measure of advice taking. The results showed that:(1)When the did not feel time pressure, the adoption of rational advice was significantly greater than that of intuitive advice. When the participants felt time pressure, there was no significant difference between the adoption of rational advice and intuitive advice.(2)Although the experience of the advisor has a significant effect on the advice taking, and the degree of the participant’s advice taking from an experienced advisor was higher than that from an inexperienced advisor, the experience of the advisor did not increase th participants e advice taking extent of intuitive advice.(3)When the task was simple, the participant’s adoption of rational advice was significantly greater than that of intuitive advice. When the task was difficult, there was no significant difference between the participant’s adoption of rational advice and intuitive advice. In short,in general,decision-makers are more willing to adopt the advice from rationality, but when the participants are under time pressure and the task is difficult, there is no significant difference between the adoption of rational advice and intuitive advice. |
