| English writing is an important way to inspect the comprehensive English level of high school students.It plays a pivotal role in high school English teaching and learning.Senior English writing not only inspect the accuracy of vocabulary and grammar,but also examines students’ discourse ability and logical thinking ability,that is,the coherence of writing.As a dominant means of discourse cohesion,"conjunctions" play an important role in the coherence of students’ writing.Therefore,based on the discourse cohesion theory,this study conducts a two-month study on the application of conjunctions in high school English writing teaching,and aims to answer the following questions:1.How to improve the coherence of English writing in Senior Two through the teaching of conjunctions?2.What kinds of changes will take place in students’writing after conjunction instruction?Based on the theory of discourse cohesion,the author teaches conjunctions of discourse cohesion in a class of Senior Two in a Senior High School of Yan Bian.In the teaching process,the author summarizes and categorizes the conjunctions taught from the junior high school to the senior high school,dividing the conjunctions into seven categories,and teaches the students the importance of text coherence and the use of each kind of conjunctions.Through practice questions such as filling in blank questions,correcting mistakes,merging sentence questions,modifying sentence questions,translating sentence questions,translating paragraph questions,and writing questions to help students consolidate the correct use of conjunctions and deepen their understanding of conjunctions.Through the analysis of the students’ writing,It is found that the use of conjunctions in the writing of students showed a changing trend from nothing to simple,from simple to complex:the average number of conjunctions used has increased significantly-Students can use conjunctions appropriately according to their logical needs,from the initial average of 1.74 conjunctions in each composition to an average of about 6-7 conjunctions in each composition,and they are all used properly;the quality of the use of conjunctions has also changed significantly-students master more vocabularies which matched their grade.In the later part of the research,the author interviewed five students.The students thought that the teaching of conjunctions in these three stages was very helpful to their writing.Students’ discourse coherence and logical thinking ability in writing have also been effectively enhanced,thereby their English writing skills also be improved.What’s more,students’ understanding and learning attitude to conjunctions have also changed.Through classroom observation,it is found that students’ learning initiative has been improved,and they will actively ask teachers about their knowledge blind areas and actively participate in the discussion in class.By making a special score on the consistency of student composition,this paper finds that the improvement of conjunctions’ number and quality and the improvement of composition coherence are positively related.Thus,it is concluded that the targeted teaching of conjunctions in writing teaching can improve the logic and consistency of students’ composition.In this study,the teaching of conjunctions in English writing classes will provide suggestions for future high school English writing teaching,and help English teachers to cultivate students’ textual ability and logical thinking ability in English writing teaching. |
