A Report On The E-C Translation Of Neologisms In Science Fiction

Based on Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory,this translation report,taking the neologisms in science fiction Little Brother as an example,attempts to summarize the translation methods of neologisms,so as to provide a reference for the translation practice of science fiction.This paper begins with the research background of the report and points out that the translation of new words has always been a difficult issue in the process of science fiction translation,which has attracted the attention of some domestic scholars.Thus the study of neologism translation is of great significance towards science fiction translation.Then the novel,Little Brother,and the object of this translation practice is briefly introduced before referring to the principles of science fiction translation put forward by professor Guo Jianzhong who,in his Studies of Sci-Tech and Sci-Fic Translation proposed making the translation fully convey original features.In the process of translation,based on Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory,strategies of domestication and foreignization are used to deal with the source text.Through practice,it is proved that the Communicative Translation Theory is an appropriate guiding theory for the translation of science fiction.In this translation report,translation methods are analyzed for formal neologisms,semantic neologisms and pragmatic neologisms based on the selected examples.In the translation of formal neologisms,the foreignization strategy is mainly adopted,while in translating semantic and pragmatic neologisms domesticating is the most used strategy.
