| This is a report on E-C translation of the subtitle of episodes 3,5,7,8 and 9 of Season 1of the sitcom The Corners.The Corners Season 1 was shown by American Broadcasting Corporation in 2018,which depicted the sweetness and bitterness in the lives of the Corners.The translator joined the subtitle translation group of free translators that belongs to YYeTs in July 2019 and then participated in the translation of The Corners Season 1.The guiding theory for this translation project is Skopos Theory,which emphasizes the aim of the source text and the function of the target text.The aim of this translation project is Entertainment First,which is determined considering the director’s intention and the audience’s expectation.Besides,according to the investigations of Chinese audience of American TV series,the target audience of this project is people at the age of 19 to 40 years with college education.18 examples are analyzed in the translation report to illustrate solutions to difficulties in the translation,including space limitation and cultural differences.Considering space limitation,substitution of images is used.Images that can be accepted by Chinese audience are adopted in translation to reduce annotations.Redundant information is deleted and rearrangement is made to simplify long sentences.Considering cultural differences,free translation is used to translate puns and special names,trying to embody both literal and implied meanings in the translation.Idioms and catchwords are also quoted with proper rewrite to improve punch lines.The practice shows that the translation of subtitles should accord with the characters’ personalities.Sitcom subtitle translation should be audience-oriented and adjusted according to the purpose of the source text to enhance the audience’s enjoyment in addition to their understanding.This report summarizes the techiniques in subtitle translation in the hope to provide reference for sitcom subtitle translation in the future. |
