As globalization booms,it is incredibly significant to know the laws of various countries.Legal translation plays a main role in this process and provides the legal guarantee for political, economic and cultural exchanges. This report is developed on the basis of the translation of the excerpt, the fifth and sixth chapter of Justice Without Trial: Law Enforcement in Democratic Society. The former mainly reviews the confrontation between police and suspects in the implementation of traffic law and prostitution law,and the latter analyzes the informer system. The source text is full of obscure words and sentences.Specifically, there are terms, polysemes, and metaphorical words at the lexical level, attributive clauses and parentheses at the syntactic level, and cohesion of references and conjunctions at the discoursal level. All of them posed difficulties to the translation. Therefore, based on the translation of the excerpt, chapter five and chapter six of the book, and guided by relevance theory, the difficulties in the translation process were analyzed and solutions were proposed in this report. In accordance with relevance theory, the translator should endeavor to achieve the optimal relevance so that the translated text can realize a sufficient contextual effect. Thus, the target readers can understand the intention of the author of the source text with the least processing effort.Accordingly, solutions were put forward from the aspects of word, sentence and text, and case studies of the difficulties encountered in translation were made.In conclusion, solutions at the lexical level included annotation, extension and idiomatic translation;at the syntactic level, methods of division and changes of word order were applied;omission and repetition were adopted at the discoursal level. It is hoped that this article can give some reference and inspiration to legal translators.
