Research On Novels Of Hu Shang In Tang Dynasty

Merchant have always been one of the objects of literature.But it was until the Tang dynasty that the merchant image appeared in literary works.Hu businessmen as a special type of merchants,Tang people spare no effort to create novel with rich imagination with its substantial content.Meanwhile,the culture of hu businessmen influenced all aspects of Tang society.Thus,it is necessary to have a comprehensive and profound understanding of hu shang and its related stories.In this paper,a total of 58 novels on the theme of hu merchants are sorted out Taiping Guang Ji,Novels of the Five dynasties and Tang dynasty and Notes on novels of the Five dynasties and the Tang dynasty,combining with the historical literature.In order to have a comprehensive understanding of hu shang,re-examine the artistic characteristics of foreign stories and the influence on the hu shang’s novels of Ming and Qing dynasties.The thesis is divided into the following five parts:The first chapter is an overview of foreign merchants and foreign merchants’ stories.Firstly,it defines the conception of "hu" and the concept of "hu shang",since the Tang dynasty by using the historical materials.At the same time,sort out the different names of "hu shang".Then,the author summarizes the hu shang’s novels involved in Taiping Guang Ji,Novels of the Five dynasties and the Tang dynasty and Notes on novels of the Five dynasties and the Tang dynasty,and divides them into five categorise.The second chapter is the background of the emergence of hu shang novels in Tang dynasty.This chapter mainly analyzes the reasons for a large number of foreign businessmen to come to China from the following three aspects: the frequent foreign trade exchange since the Tang dynasty,the open and friendly foreign policies and the unimpeded foreign traffic in Tang dynasty.The third chapter is the description of hu shang in the novels of Tang dynasty.This chapter takes the story of hu shang in the novel as the starting point and analyzes the trade and living conditions of hu shang in China with other materials.Hu merchants came to China to trade mainly through the means of tribute and the folk,among which the folk trade is the main object described in the novel.Some hu merchants even migrated to the Tang dynasty with their families,so that their social life,religious beliefs,weddings and funerals naturally appeared in the literary works.Based on this,we can understand the living conditions of hu merchants in the Tang dynasty and the influence of hu culture on the Tang dynasty.The fourth chapter is the story of recognize treasure of hu shang in Tang dynasty.This chapter discusses from four aspects: the types of stories,various plots,unique narrative art and profound cultural implications.By analyzing the artistic characteristics and cultural implication of the treasure of foreign land,looking at the ‘qi’ to know the treasure,gashing the body to hide the pearl,we can understand the inner world of Tang people through this channel.The fifth chapter is the influence of hu shang recognize treasure stories on novels of Ming and Qing dynasty.Taking "Sanyan Erpai" of citizen literature," west adventure of San Bao" and "Liaozhai Zhiyi" as examples,this paper analyzes the new changes in the plots,contents,functions of treasures,purpose of writer and characteristics of the times of hu shang’s stories in the new era.
