| In the context of globalization, economic, technological, and cultural exchanges have become increasingly frequent.People’s living standards are constantly improving, and their pursuit of spiritual wellbeing becomes diverse. As one of the most expressive genres in literature, short stories hold the readers’ interest with their fascinating plots.Insightful themes of the short stories encourage people to think deeply and broaden their vision.American writer Thomas Coraghessan Boyle’s two short stories “I Walk between the Raindrops” and “Asleep at the Wheel” are chosen for translation practice. The translation practice report comprises five parts, including introduction, translation process, theoretical framework, case analysis, and conclusion. The translation process is divided into three sections, namely pre-translation,while-translation,and posttranslation. In view of the features of short stories, such as storytelling and the frequent application of rhetorical devices, based on Peter Newmark’s text typology theory, semantic and communicative translation strategies are adopted.Meanwhile translation techniques such as conversion, addition, omission, and adjustment of sentence structure are used to solve difficult problems in translation.By writing this translation practice report, the translator has found that the alternate use of semantic translation strategy and communicative translation strategy can effectively guide the translation. In addition, the translation practice has helped me to know deeper about the American society,to learn vivid expressions,to better my translation skills, and to realize the importance of teamwork. At the same time, limited by the translator’s Chinese writing skill, the style of the original texts is not reproduced fully in translation. |
