Reading is an important way of language learning and is also the texting point of National English Curriculum Standards for Common Senior High School. However, there are some problems on the traditional English reading teaching in senior high schools. For example, teachers exceedingly focus on language points such as vocabularies, structures and grammar knowledge instead of developing students’ language using ability, which leads to tediousness and insipidness of English class. Therefore, one of the new requirements for English teachers in the new era is to come up with ideas to effectively arouse the students’ interests in English reading as well as improving their skills and abilities of English reading.Howard Gardner,an American psychologist, put forward MI theory in his book Fames of Mind in 1983.He holds the idea that every normal person has at least eight intelligences, that is,linguist intelligence,logical-mathematical intelligence, spatial intelligence,bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence and naturalist intelligence.(1)MI theory requests that teachers should considering each student’s intelligence characters, teach students in accordance of their aptitude and choose more scientific activities to stimulate the development of multiple intelligences. This applied research is based on empirical study using MI theory into the English reading class. The students from class 4 and class 8 of senior one in Chongqing Songshuqiao Middle School were chosen to be the subjects of experiment. The experiment lasted from September 2018 to January 2019.This research made a detailed comparison about the teaching efficiency between traditional English reading teaching and the now one which is based on MI theory. At the end,it draws the conclusion that English reading teaching based on MI theory can tremendously arouse students’ interest in English reading and improve their skills and abilities of English reading.
