A Study Of China Frontier Monthly(1942-1948)

The China Frontier monthly magazine is a frontier research publication which was created by the Chongqing General Conference of the Chinese Frontier Society under the background of the national crisis and the frontier crisis in the 1940 s and aimed on elaborating the theory of governing the border,introducing border knowledge,and studying the border construction plan.The China Frontier was published in Chongqing by the General Association of the Chinese Frontier Association on January 31 th,1942.It was originally defined as a monthly journal.But because of the economic tension and limited funding during the war,many journals appeared in a combined manner.Since the preparation of the publication of volume 3,it began to cooperate with the Historiography Bookstore,with China Borderland in charge of editing,and the bookstores in printing.The China Frontier published the third volume of the 7/8 period in September 1944,but it was temporarily suspended due to the preparation of the Chinese Borderland Society for relocation to Nanjing.It was subsequently reissued in Nanjing in March 1947,and 4 volumes later,due to economic difficulties,it was finally discontinued in July 1948.From January 1942 to July 1948,the China Frontier published a total of 3 volumes and 12 journals containing 141 articles by 64 authors.The main contents of the China Frontier included the related research on ethnic issues and border issues,reflections on border issues,introduction of relevant knowledge in border regions,publication of border conditions and border administration materials,criticism of border gains and losses,and reports of the border society and so on.This article takes the China Frontier monthly magazine as the research object,and makes a detailed analysis of the background,process,editing and distribution and funding sources of the China Frontier.At the same time,it has a detailed analysis of the authors and publication statistics.The contents published in the China Frontier are summarized and four aspects were analyzed: Elaborating the theory of governing the border,introducing border knowledge,researching border control schemes and measures for building borders and analysis of other contents.The China Frontier calls on Chinese people to value frontiers and encourages Chinese people to actively engage in frontier services.During this period,the China Frontier has achieved a certain achievements.For example,firstly,the China Frontier magazine has enriched the theoretical basis of borderland research to a certain extent and introduced readers to relevant borderland knowledge and borders.Secondly,the China Frontier has put forward governance suggestions for related frontier issues so it has provided choices and reasonable border governance suggestions for better government administration,relevant reference opinions for related frontier service personnel and mainland and border areas bi-communication and exchange platform.At the same time,it can also be seen that the China Frontier focuses on the currently frontier issues,pursues the popularization of frontier research,introduces the borders issues to the people in the different forms of articles and has the characteristics of official colors.Based on this,this thesis is to demonstrate the extraordinary academic value of the China Frontier which is a concrete manifestation of the second climax of frontier research in the 1940s.
